Leo Katz spent his life in pursuit of capturing the meaning of life in his paintings, murals, prints, photographs, and etchings. Through his books and lectures, he also touched hundreds of students and followers, creating a powerful legacy that has lived on well beyond his death in 1982.
Born in the Austrian Carpathian Mountains in 1887, Leo’s earliest memories were of drawing horses on scraps of paper with charcoal from the fireplace in his rural home. Fiercely driven to become an artist from a young age, he studied at the Fine Arts Academy in Vienna. Leo arrived in America in 1921 and later became an American Citizen.
As an immigrant American, Leo was deeply inspired by the unique nature of the American spirit which is evident throughout his broad body of work. From intensely beautiful images of the emerging American West, to stirring works depicting the effects of World War, Leo captured a truly unique perspective of American history that is both haunting and uplifting.
