Leo Katz was formally trainined at the Fine Arts Academy in Vienna Austria between 1905-1909. He traveled extensively and continued his studies while painting portraits between 1910-1914.

Leo completed his first Mural in 1913 at a castle in Moravia.
between 1915 and 1921 Leo completed many famous portrait studies including those of the Vanderlip family. Mr Frank Vanderlip later sponsered Leo to come to the United States.

Leo then taught the first courses on Modern Art at the Metropilitan Museum in NY and completed a one man show of portaits at the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC.

Leo furthered his passion for murals and in 1932 asssisted Jose Clemente Orozco in his work on the frescoes at Dartmouth College. In 1933 he completed an 1800 sf mural at the chicago worlds fair and in 1936 completed the crossroad mural at the Frank Wiggins tade school in LA.

From 1934 to 1946 was active in printmaking and was Stanley Williams friend and assistant at Atelier 17. Leo completed about 20 immportant prints while at Atelier 17 and closed the operation for Hayter when he returned to france in 1950.

Leo was always interested in the budding field of photography and along with Lotte Jacobi, Leo saw parallels between print making and photography. Leo taught photography at Spelman College and wrote articles on photography during this period.
