"During a summer in Patzcuaro, Mexico towards the end of my vacation, the first reports of an outbreak of a war in Europe arrived. That night I saw an old lonely woman, head and face covered with her Rebozo, and I suddenly had a feeling that this figure which had no individual features, looked like a symbol of that enormous wave of homelessness which I felt coming all over the world.
I made a quick sketch which I later worked into a large water color and oil painting. By 1944 the number of homeless people grew to such proportions that I drew this on a stone to make a print that would not be restricted to a single picture or to a single painting."
