"This was my first lithograph. After many years of studying the horses at the famous stables in Vienna, it was natural to try my first lithograph without a sketch or an other preparation. The meaning of this composition is partly autobiographical and partly universal.
A powerful animal full of zest and life, is tied to a few morbid dead stumps while storm clouds are coming closer. This feeling of powerful intentions and abilities completely frustrated through dead and deadly nothings has been experienced so widely that it does not need further explanation."
