"During the Stradivarius anniversary in 1937, the Musical Art Quartet received from patrons a complete set of Stradivarius instruments. To commemorate the occasion I was commissioned to make a lithograph of the quartet.
Life size portrait studies were made and many sketches during rehearsals and performances were executed. Since this ensemble did not lend itself to emotional expression, I chose a formal Ingres style of execution and was particularly interested in the symphony of hands."
