"In 1944 when I made this print, I was active in Stanley William Hayter's Atelier 17 in New York City. It was also an election year. On the radio and in the streets through loudspeakers everywhere were speeches, speeches and more speeches. In my own profession I had an unusual load of lectures or different universities and museums with over 1000 students in my classes at Brooklyn College alone.

As a result I felt as if I were a parrot, in a world of parrots where all the bullions of words produced one bombarded could not possibly have any meaning left. So I etched a parrot as monumental as I could on a small plate and left it to the bubbles of acid to supply the textural interest."
